About the Authors
We are Nancy
Burgon and Todd Wells, a retired couple in our seventies
who live near Bend, Oregon. Nancy is a retired elementary
teacher and Todd is a retired geographer. We spend a few
months each summer scouting out prospective day hikes, then
a few weeks each winter adding our selections to this
website. Kindly direct any comments or suggestions to our
email link at left.
For additional hikes and explorations in the Central Oregon
area, see our sister website: Central Oregon
Geographica
Acknowledgements
Some of the day hikes on this
website are new and original, but many were first mentioned
in other Northwest hiking guides. For these latter hikes,
we have re-visited the area, re-hiked the trails, then
revised or updated their hike descriptions.
• We owe a special debt of
gratitude to William Sullivan and The Mountaineers
Books,
whose comprehensive hiking guides for both Oregon and
Washington
helped us
immensely in this project.
• Special mention also goes
to Fred Barstad for his books, Hiking Oregon’s Eagle
Cap
Wilderness and Hiking Hells
Canyon,
both excellent guides to these areas.
•
For Oregon’s forest lands, we are indebted to Wendell Wood,
whose Walking Guide
to Oregon’s
Ancient Forests set a standard for all remote
hiking guides to follow.
•
For Oregon’s desert lands, we salute Andy Kerr’s
Oregon Desert
Guide: 70 Hikes,
which has
been helpful as both a desert travel manual and hiking
guide.
• For Eastern Washington, the
guidebook by Rich Landers and Craig Romero,
Day
Hiking
Eastern Washington, gave us a good place to start
in this region.
